A Santa Monica man died in a fiery crash Thursday after his van careened off a freeway transition road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A witness told authorities that the 1978 Dodge van was “weaving erratically” for at least two miles on the westbound Foothill Freeway moments before the crash, CHP Officer Frank Sansone said.
The 55-year-old driver rear-ended another vehicle before losing control on the transition road to the southbound Glendale Freeway. It was unknown if any other factor, such as medical problems, played a role in the crash, Sansone said.
Sansone said the victim was from Santa Monica, but a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said the man’s identity had not yet been confirmed.
