Council Gives Preliminary OK to Hike in Taxi Fares

LOS ANGELES — After 14 years without a taxi fare hike, the City Council on Friday preliminarily agreed to increase rates by 12% to help cab operators offset rising gas prices.
In a 13-1 vote, the council agreed that cab operators should be allowed to charge $1.90 for the first one-ninth mile, and another 20 cents per each additional ninth of a mile.
The council also gave taxi companies approval to levy a $2.50 surcharge for trips originating at Los Angeles International Airport, and a $27 flat fare for trips between LAX and downtown Los Angeles.
On average, the fare for a typical five-mile taxi ride would increase from $9.58 to $10.70.
The council is set to take a final vote on the rate hike next week.
