Charter Schools Need Critical Eye

Re “Give Districts the Freedom of Charter Schools,” Orange County Voices article April 16 by Capistrano Unified School District Supt. James A. Fleming:
Fleming’s proposal for a charter school district makes me wonder what else he considers “meaningless compliance review” besides improperly engraved serial numbers?
Does his interpretation of “meaningless” apply to the rights of teachers, parents and disabled students?
To whom besides the Department of Education will a student or parent turn if they disagree with Fleming’s “decentralized approach” to education or if their state-guaranteed rights are circumvented or violated?
I urge the parents of Capistrano Unified to take a long, hard look at the full implications of a charter district because someday that “meaningless compliance review” may protect the rights and education of their children.
