* Alcan Aluminium Ltd. of Canada, the world’s second-largest aluminum company, said it won U.S. antitrust approval for its $5.25-billion purchase of Swiss rival Algroup. The companies originally planned a three-way combination with Pechiney of France but abandoned that proposal after facing antitrust opposition from the European Union. Alcan and Algroup received EU approval for their smaller two-way combination in March. The EU and the Justice Department are also reviewing Alcoa Inc.’s proposed $6.3-billion purchase of Reynolds Metals Co. Pittsburgh-based Alcoa is the world’s biggest aluminum company; Richmond, Va.-based Reynolds is No. 3.
