N.Y. Cabbies to Get Bulletproof Dividers

NEW YORK — Alarmed by killings of livery cab drivers, the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission voted Tuesday to require all drivers to install bulletproof partitions or security cameras in their cars.
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has pledged a $5-million grant to help pay for the security devices.
Seven drivers have been killed this year. None of the drivers killed had a partition, police said.
Commission chairwoman Diane McGrath McKechnie said the grant will pay for drivers to buy partitions, which cost between $250 and $350, but will pay only up to $350 for cameras, which start at $600.
