* Julie Manson of San Diego Rancho Bernardo High and Jenna Keith of Bakersfield Centennial have signed to run cross-country at UC Irvine.
Manson finished fourth in the 3,200 meters at the FloJo Memorial Arcadia Invitational April 8. Her time of 10:36.21 was the third-best in California this season.
Abby Miller, one of the top distance runners in the nation who also has signed with Irvine, finished fifth in the 3,200.
Keith finished third in the 1,500 and 800 at the Mt. San Antonio College relays last weekend.
BASKETBALL
Maggie Barnett of Rosary has made a commitment to attend New York University, where she will play basketball.
NYU, a Division III school in Manhattan that offers only academic scholarships, is coming off a 22-5 season, its worst in nine years. It had reached the Division III playoff round of 16 the previous eight seasons; in 1997 it won the national title.
Barnett, a 5-foot-6 guard and twice a Times’ all-county first-team selection, averaged 16.3 points and 4.2 assists last season.
BASEBALL
When Golden West’s Ty Harper went 0 for 3 April 6 against Fullerton, it ended a 28-game hitting streak that few knew existed.
Harper, who is superstitious, requested that team members, coaches and athletic department personnel keep the streak quiet until it ended. The streak tied a school record.
Harper leads the Orange Empire Conference with 67 hits, 53 RBIs and 17 doubles. He is hitting .459.
WRESTLING
Tom Joice, who coached Brea’s wrestling program for one season, resigned on Monday. Joice left to concentrate on his studies to become a teacher, said Hampton, Brea’s athletic director.
SOFTBALL
Kathy Ponce, an all-county softball player at Ocean View who went on to pitch at Arizona State, has taken over coaching duties at Ocean View. She replaces Lisa Parra, who said she resigned.
