Goalie’s offense sparks Rio Mesa

Senior goalie Dan Improta scored twice on length-of-the-pool shots, the second with 56 seconds left in overtime, lifting Rio Mesa to a 6-5 victory over Nordhoff in a second-round game of the Calabasas water polo tournament Friday at Calabasas.
Improta has four goals, all on similar shots, this season. His first goal against Nordhoff came with one second left in the second quarter and gave the Spartans a 5-2 lead. He also made 26 saves, including five in overtime.
Rio Mesa (3-1) won despite playing most of the fourth period and overtime without starters Nick Glaze and Trevor Owens, who kicked out after picking up three ejection fouls.
Nordhoff (3-6) closed to 5-2 with two goals in the third quarter, and tied it with fourth-quarter scores by Danny Shepherd, Brian Peck and Scott Atkinson.
Rio Mesa won its first-round game in overtime, 9-8, as Glaze converted an outside shot with 1:49 left in the three-minute period.
Rio Mesa took a 5-3 halftime advantage with four goals in the second quarter, including two by Owens.
Glaze has five goals.
Ayala 10, Royal 7--Derek Anderson had three goals and Tom Onyshko made 11 saves in a third-round game of the Rowland tournament at Ayala High.
Royal (7-2) trailed by one going into the fourth quarter. Ramiro Saldain had two goals for the Highlanders.
Anderson scored five times in Royal’s 9-6 second-round victory over Burroughs. Tyler Templeton added two goals and Onyshko had 21 saves. Royal held standout Jason Falitz to two goals.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Campbell Hall 15, Louisville 3--Campbell Hall’s Melissa Nguyen improved to 18-0 after sweeping three opponents, including a set in which she did not lose a point against Louisville’s Leisel Haskell, in a nonleague match at Calabasas Swim Club.
Campbell Hall (5-1) won all nine doubles sets. The No. 3 team of Jackie Stein and Emily Bruckner recorded its first sweep.
Simi Valley 12, Royal 6--Jessica Nguyen and Catherine Caballero swept three sets and the Pioneers (6-1, 1-0) won seven of nine doubles sets in a Marmonte League victory at Rancho Simi Community Park.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Moorpark 1, Canyons 0--Amanda Light scored an unassisted goal from 10 yards in the 85th minute after making a steal to give Moorpark a Western State Conference victory at Canyons.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristina Verano made seven saves in place of sophomore Julie Jensen, who injured her knee in the previous game. Moorpark (6-2, 3-0) has won four consecutive games.
COLLEGE WRESTLING
Palomar 24, Moorpark 20--Joe Vitromiell pinned Chris Jansen at 4:27 to give Palomar a nonconference victory at Moorpark (5-1).
Moorpark is ranked third in the state and Palomar second.
