Cypress, Santa Ana Soccer Teams Win in Overtime

The Cypress women’s and Santa Ana men’s soccer teams needed overtime in the semifinals of the state soccer tournament, but both pulled out victories and advanced to finals today at the Olypmic Training Center in Chula Vista.
Both teams scored two overtime goals as Cypress defeated Ohlone, 4-2, and Santa Ana knocked off Santa Rosa, 3-1.
Cypress trailed, 2-1, and was playing a man down for the final 18 minutes of regulation when Tymarie Novak forced overtime with a goal in the 89th minute off a pass from Lisa Hermen.
Five minutes into overtime, Ali Nunez took a pass from Novak and scored the eventual winner from 13 yards out. Cypress (26-0), the top-seeded team from Southern California, will face second-seeded El Camino in today’s 2 p.m. championship game. In the men’s semifinal, Santa Ana’s Tomas Serna, the state’s leading scorer, scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime. Jose Retiz sealed the victory with Santa Ana’s second overtime goal.
Santa Ana (24-0), the top-seeded team from Southern California, will play Canada College, Northern California’s top-seeded team, in today’s final at 1 p.m.
In the Southern California women’s volleyball regionals:
Golden West 3, Cerritos 0--Grace Boyd had 17 kills and Julie Renfrow added 15 to help the top-ranked Rustlers (23-0) advance to the state tournament for the 13th consecutive year. Golden West will meet Butte (17-3) in the state tournament Dec. 3 at Pasadena City.
Irvine Valley 3, Ventura 1--Irvine Valley defeated Ventura, ranked No. 3 in the state, 15-11, 14-16, 15-11, 15-11. Irvine Valley had never won a playoff match before this season.
