Old Photo, New Spin

I’ll bet a buck that the “huge, capsule-like head protectors” in the photograph (left) accompanying Suzanne Muchnic’s “ ‘The Living Lens’ Opens a New Art Window” (Nov. 20) are really propeller spinner hubs from a few DC-3s.
Each hub would have three holes in it--like the ones through which the mechanics are peering--to accommodate the three blades of a DC-3 engine’s propeller. The other two holes in each hub are out of sight, each being one-third around the circumference of the hub.
The mechanics were having a little fun, perhaps at the urging of the anonymous photographer.
