Outhouses

Re “A Funky Twist to American Nostalgia Wave: Outhouses Are In,” Nov. 11: Thanks, Stephanie Simon, for the laughs and memories your article on the “little brown shack out back” brought me.

With no electric lights, no flashlight and three big brothers and Mom and Dad who might be in there, I had to devise a warning signal early on. I learned to whistle very young and used it as I started down the path.

Not a good idea anymore when you are on the way to the ladies room, though. I’ve learned lots of people don’t know that women can whistle.
