IRVINE

City Council members will debate tonight whether to spend $1.7 million to market countywide their revised Millennium Plan, the city’s land use concept for the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

The county, which has planning authority over the base, is pursuing plans for a 24-hour international airport at the abandoned air station. The Millennium Plan, Irvine’s alternative, boasts a 757-acre Suburban Park surrounded by homes, businesses and a wildlife preserve.

The $1.7 million would come out of the city’s $5-million El Toro Fund. The marketing calls for two new cable television ads and six mailers to reach those who are not familiar with the city’s proposal.

The Irvine City Council meets tonight at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, 1 Civic Center Plaza.
