Re “A Life’s Passion,” May 22:
Thank you for your full-length interview and report on Vicente Fernandez. He is a treasure and the major voice in mariachi music. His courageous efforts to keep cool despite his personal tragedies set standards for all of us. He will forever be “El Rey.”
May God bless him.

In reading Jesse Katz’s brilliantly written piece on Fernandez I was enlightened to the fact that Fernandez has great character to match his magnificent voice. Even gabachos like myself who can only understand a portion of the Spanish must appreciate the depth of emotion the great singer pours into his songs. Once, with a Salvadoran friend, we listened in awe to one of Vicente’s rancheras and with tears in my eyes I asked him to translate and tell me what love had driven the singer to such ecstasy. My friend answered, “He’s singing about his horse!”
