Privacy on Internet

Re “Hey, Web, Wake Up” (editorial, May 14), on privacy protection on the Internet: My own small effort in this direction is setting my computer to notify me when a Web site wants to send a cookie and to reject all cookies with the exception of those that are necessary if I decide to, for example, purchase something or register to check an account online.

I have several times taken up the invitation to “contact us,” stating my intention not to revisit the site due to the excessive number of cookies I must accept or reject before gaining access to the information supposedly available there. Why should I have to give a business easier access to me for its online market research or advertising than I’d give if I browsed at its physical location?
