Anti-Government Strike Begins; 2 Hurt

Two people were wounded as an anti-government general strike called by left-wing unions shut down most small businesses, schools and public transportation in the Dominican Republic. A young man was shot and wounded in the northern city of San Francisco de Macoris, and another was wounded when a bomb exploded in Azua in the south, according to radio reports. The strikers are demanding that the government improve services, raise salaries, stop the privatization of public businesses and reduce prices for food and fuel.
