The city is officially kicking off the beach season with a May 26 ceremony to mark the completion of the beach replenishment project. Crews rescued a badly deteriorated beach by shipping in almost 90,000 tons of sand from the desert near Palmdale over two years. The ceremony, expected to include city officials and state legislators, starts at 1 p.m. next to the pier.
