Undefeated Villa Park Top Seeded

Villa Park received the No. 1 seeding to the Southern Section Division I badminton team playoffs when pairings were announced Monday.

The Spartans (14-0) open the playoffs May 18 against visiting Etiwanda, the third-place team from the Ivy League. Villa Park’s toughest competition could come in the semifinals against fourth-seeded Alhambra, champion of the Almont League.

Garden Grove (11-1) appears to have a tougher road to its third consecutive final. The second-seeded Argonauts, whose opening-round opponent is Loara on May 18, face possible matchups in the quarterfinals against defending Division II champion Long Beach Wilson and in the semifinals against third-seeded Hacienda Heights Wilson.

Alhambra Keppel, which has won nine of the last 10 Division I titles, also is in the same bracket as Garden Grove. Cypress (10-3), the Empire League champion, meets visiting Fullerton in the first round.

The team championships are May 27 at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Among individuals, Villa Park’s May Mangkalakiri and Mike Chansawangpuvana were seeded No. 1 in mixed doubles, which will be played Thursday beginning at 3 p.m at the Orange County Badminton Club.
