Municipal Judge Wins American Bar Award

LOS ANGELES — A Municipal judge has been selected to receive an award from a special division of the American Bar Assn. for outstanding service.
Judge Veronica S. McBeth is the winner of the 1999 Franklin N. Flaschner Award. The annual award is given to judges who exemplify the judicial competence, personal character and ideals of the late Chief Judge Franklin N. Flaschner of the District Court of Massachusetts.
McBeth, who received her degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1975, was appointed to the bench in 1981.
She has presided over civil and criminal cases and is best known for a 1985 case in which she sentenced a slumlord to house arrest in one of his own apartment buildings.
She has been reelected by her peers, 112 bench officers in the Los Angeles Municipal Court, to serve through 2000.
