Bausch & Lomb Inc. agreed to sell an 87.5% stake in its laboratories unit that breeds rodents for research to a unit of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette for $443 million. Bausch & Lomb also said its second-quarter operating profit rose 25% to $47.1 million, or 80 cents a share, beating forecasts by 3 cents, as revenue rose 11% to $453.3 million.

Britain’s Shire Pharmaceuticals Group said it plans to acquire Roberts Pharmaceutical Corp. of Eatontown, N.J., in a stock swap deal worth about $1 billion. Both companies specialize in developing and selling brand-name drugs acquired or licensed from other companies late in the research process.
