Matadors Nail Down a Trifecta

Soccer standouts Gentry Green of Canyon High, Melissa Cleal of El Camino Real and Brynne Blumstein of Cleveland have committed to Cal State Northridge.
The Matadors are also recruiting Cindy Mallett of Simi Valley, the Marmonte League’s top defender, and midfielder Amy Watts of Chaminade.
Jaclyn Rosenson, a sophomore at Harvard-Westlake, has been selected to participate in the inaugural U.S. Scholar-Athlete Games, June 26-July 2 in Rhode Island.
Rosenson, 15, will be randomly placed on teams to play with students from around the U.S.
FOOTBALL
Robert Winson, an All-Ventura County lineman at St. Bonaventure, has committed to Harvard.
Nate Rasmussen, an All-Foothill League lineman at Hart, has accepted an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy.
Rick Jacobs, who averaged 42.8 yards a punt for Notre Dame High, has been invited to walk on at UCLA. The Bruins must replace punter Chris Sailer, who also attended Notre Dame.
BASEBALL
Merle Sanders of North Hills, a longtime Little League administrator, died Tuesday after battling a brain tumor for more than a year. He was 67.
Sanders served as the District 40 administrator for more than 20 years and announced games at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills.
Sanders is survived by his wife, Sylvia, four sons and a grandson.
A City Section baseball preview show will air at 8:30 p.m. Monday on the Los Angeles Board of Education’s channel 58, KLCS. The show takes a look at every team in the City Section.
The program will air again at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 and at 9 p.m. Feb. 26.
Pitcher Chris Cordeiro of Thousand Oaks High has been invited to the Team One National Showcase June 18-20 in Tampa, Fla.
Infielder Billy Lockin of Thousand Oaks will attend the Team One Western Regional Showcase July 18-20 in Phoenix. Both events bring together top high school prospects.
