Weinberg Pitches in for Dons
Jeremy Weinberg gave up five hits and had five strikeouts in eight innings as Santa Ana beat visiting Canyons, 13-3, in a nonconference baseball game Sunday.
The performance by Weinberg, who was expected to be a position player, was especially pleasing to Coach Don Sneddon, who is looking for more pitching. The Dons will most likely be without sophomore Greg Young (arm trouble) this season.
Richard Lane hit two homers and drove in five runs and Joe Urban also hit a home run for Santa Ana (4-0).
Jason Welch hit a two-run homer to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh as Santa Ana beat Glendale, 7-2, also Sunday.
In the Coast Classic:
Golden West 11, Moorpark 0--Luis Santos, Ryan Brown and Darin Elggren each drove in two runs for host Golden West (3-0).
Andrew Rodriguez (1-0) gave up five hits in six innings for the victory. Edgar Ibarra worked the final two innings to complete the shutout.
