Americans had nearly 40 million inpatient procedures in 1995, the latest year for which statistics are available.
The statistics also show:
* The number of operations performed on the nervous system: 954,000
* On the endocrine system: 85,000
* On the eyes: 269,000
* On the ears: 68,000
* On the nose, mouth and pharynx: 353,000
* On the respiratory system: 1.04 million
* On the cardiovascular system: 4.84 million
* On the digestive system: 5.1 million
* On the urinary system: 1.1 million
* On the musculoskeletal system: 3.1 million
* Number of obstetrical procedures: 6.4 million
