Trustees of the Irvine Unified School District approved new plans for classroom libraries this month. The 1999 California Classroom Library Materials Act gives districts about $10 for each student in kindergarten through fourth grade. A 1998 school library law gave about $29 per student for the entire student body. But district officials said the additional money would help to make books more available.
The state money cannot be used to pay for librarians, so administrators will have to figure out a way to maintain the new libraries under the district’s cash-strapped circumstances.
