D.A.’s Slight Lead Increases in S.F. Vote Tally

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Dist. Atty. Terence Hallinan’s lead over challenger Bill Fazio increased further Tuesday, when the first batch of provisional ballots were counted.
As of Tuesday, Hallinan had 103,262 votes to the 102,316 cast for Fazio--a lead of 946 votes with less than 7,200 provisional ballots remaining.
A provisional ballot covers a variety of situations. In some cases, the person voting is not on the rolls at the polling place, or votes at the wrong polling place. Those ballots each need to be inspected by hand.
Usually the provisional ballots counted first are for those who voted at the wrong polling place. Others that are harder to verify may never be computed into the total tally.
Officials say that the final count may not be in until next week.
