At least 12 people died in a fire that broke out at a dormitory at Moscow State University early today, officials said.

A city fire official said it took 100 firefighters more than two hours to extinguish the blaze.

The fire tore through the second floor of the building. A reporter who entered the building after the blaze was extinguished saw a charred body by an elevator on the second floor.

Bedsheets or towels had been tied together and lowered out of a window in an apparent attempt by some residents to escape. About a dozen ambulances were parked in front of the building.

Interfax news agency quoted law enforcement sources as saying more victims might be found. Most of the victims died of inhaling toxic fumes, it said.

Investigators were still seeking the cause of the fire, Interfax said.
