Tollways Take a Toll on Habitat
Laura Coley Eisenberg’s Dec. 5 letter was all about compensation and mitigation, the Transportation Corridor Agencies’ favorite words.
If compensation and mitigation are necessary, doesn’t it imply damage already done? I think a lot of people would prefer to hear preserve, conserve, protect or save.
TCA may be setting aside areas for preservation of some affected species, but in many cases these areas are islands amid greater sprawl and development.
While touting TCA’s great preservation efforts, Eisenberg is failing to mention the basic truth that toll roads destroy habitats and encourage development.
There isn’t much back country left. Isn’t it time to stop, before it’s too late?
