McElwee Graduates With Honors

Heath McElwee, a former Granada Hills High and Cal State Northridge baseball player, received the overall excellence award among the class of 28 graduates Friday during ceremonies at the Los Angeles Police Department Academy in Elysian Park.

McElwee, 26, also received the top achievement award in physical conditioning.

Nick Pikor, another former Granada Hills baseball player, was selected top graduate in weapons proficiency.

Also in the graduating class was Will Skett, former Reseda and Valley baseball player.

FOOTBALL

* Hart High (14-0) was ranked second to Concord De La Salle in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, which selected Westlake its Division II team of the year.

Hart was ranked No. 1 in Southern California.

Westlake (13-1) was ranked No. 9 overall and No. 6 in Southern California.

St. Bonaventure was ranked No. 2 in the state in Division IV.

Paraclete (11-3) was ranked No. 4 in Division IV and Nordhoff (11-3) was No. 5.

* Rob Phenicie, a former offensive coordinator at Cal State Northridge, was hired Friday as wide receivers coach at Wyoming.

Phenicie was forced to resign at Northridge in July during the school’s investigation into NCAA rules violations in the football program.

BASKETBALL

* Sepulveda Recreation Center is holding a free clinic for coaches today from noon-4 p.m.

* Nordhoff High will host alumni games on Thursday.

The girls’ game is at 5 p.m., the boys’ at 7 p.m.

BASEBALL

The Oxnard College Holiday Baseball Clinic is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Sunday at Oxnard.

The clinic, for players 7-12, costs $75 per player with an unwrapped gift, $90 without a gift. Proceeds go to Oxnard’s program and gifts go to disadvantaged children in Ventura County.
