Esperanza 61, South Gate 53--Anthony Vicencia had 13 points for Esperanza (3-4).
Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 61, Capistrano Valley 48--J.S. Nash scored 31 points for Rancho Verde. Capistrano Valley (4-3) cut the lead to 49-44 on a free throw by Bryan Mallon with 4:27 remaining but missed its next five shots.
In pool play at the Irvine World News tournament:
Irvine 67, Jurupa Valley 59--Andrew Bosshart scored 35 points, including six three-pointers, and Matt Roggero had 25 points, including five three-pointers, for host Irvine (3-5), which advanced to Friday’s semifinals at University.
Vista 68, Laguna Beach 62--Travis Hanour scored 37 points, including five three-pointers, for Laguna Beach (3-5).
Woodbridge 65, Alhambra Keppel 44--Regan Arroyo scored 14 points for Woodbridge (5-3).
University 78, Dana Hills 50--Andy Lawrence scored nine of his 25 points in the fourth quarter for University (5-2). Andrew Spaulding had 15 points for Dana Hills (3-6).
In the second round of the Sonora tournament:
Corona del Mar 50, L.A. Verbum Dei 39--Kevin Hansen had 29 points and seven rebounds to help Corona del Mar (6-2) advance to play Downey Warren in Friday’s semifinals. Wednesday victory was the 200th victory over Coach Paul Orris’ 14-year career.
In the Troy Tournament:
Sunny Hills 71, Paramount 50--Eddie Jung scored 23 points, including five three-pointers, and freshman Tony Gonzalez had 22 points and 15 rebounds and Eric Hardeman had 16 points and 18 rebounds for Sunny Hills (4-4).
Troy 60, Los Amigos 25--Mark Alhberg had six points and 10 rebounds for Troy (8-0).
In the Vista Tri-City tournament:
St. Margaret’s 77, Oceanside Oak Grove 39--Weston Begg scored 16 points for St. Margaret’s (3-4).
In nonleague games:
El Dorado 58, Buena Park 50--Mike Wulff scored 18 points for El Dorado (8-1). Chris Ingram had 17 points and 10 rebounds for host Buena Park (6-3).
Fullerton 57, Montebello 47--Akachi Azubuike scored a game-high 20 points for the host Indians (6-1).
Magnolia 56, Loara 54--Led by junior Rohneil Coleman’s 12 fourth-quarter points, Magnolia (8-1) overcame a 16-point deficit with nine minutes remaining. Stia Asoau scored 21 points for the host Sentinels.
Thunder Melton scored 14 points for Loara (4-5).
Santa Monica St. Monica 74, Brethren Christian 58--Mike Oparah had 32 points and 13 rebounds for Brethren Christian (5-2).
Trabuco Hills 64, Aliso Niguel 62--Brennon Martin scored 17 points for Trabuco Hills (3-4), which took a four-point lead with three minutes remaining. Damion Hill made a lay up in the last two seconds for Aliso Niguel (6-3) to cut the final margin to two. Brandon Sievers had 14 points for Aliso Niguel.
