Are athletes expected to compete too often around the holidays? Would you rather spend that tme doing something else?
JEFF KUNZE
Edison, Soccer
Our coach gives us just enough time off. He makes practices optional. He gives us enough time off so that we can stay within our standards, but it also gives us time to relax and spend time with family and friends. Lots of people go out of town anyway, so if they don’t show up because they’re out of town, that’s all right. We play with who we have.

I’m really more committed to basketball. I’m really happy to play during the break. I’ve been waiting for this since school started. I’m real hyped up when the break comes because I don’t have school and all I have to do is play basketball. We get Christmas and Christmas Eve off anyway, and that’s perfect for our families. It’s just enough time off everything.
ED MATILLO
Buena Park, Boys’ Basketball Coach
The break gives parents a better chance to see their kids play. You know what my kids would be doing if we weren’t playing? They’d be at the park playing basketball. I think the kids look forward to the holidays, but you can’t just stop and not play because of the holiday because you’re in the middle of the season. If you don’t overdo it, you give the kids a few days off around Christmas and New Year’s, then playing during the holidays is no big deal.

I love this time of year. These are the best tournaments. It’s the best competition, and being with family at this time is important. But you’re not going to spend your whole holiday with your relatives. Plus, it gives your relatives a chance to see you, see how you are developing.
KEVIN SCHNEIDER
Fountain Valley, Fan
Holiday basketball tournaments are a tradition. It is a great opportunity to play some games and get ready for the league schedule. A two-week layoff would not be good for any team.
