No. 5 Fountain Valley 3, No. 2 Mater Dei 0--Cliff McKinley scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season for visiting Fountain Valley (5-1). McKinley scored in the 35th minute and again in the 43rd minute to give the Barons a 2-0 lead.
Sean Iliff scored later in the first half and goalkeeper Kyle Polak had nine saves to earn his fifth shutout for Fountain Valley.
Mater Dei drops to 6-2-1.
Estancia 7, Katella 0--Esaul Mendoza scored five goals for the second time this season and Cesar Terrones scored two goals for visiting Estancia (4-1-1).
Irvine 6, Laguna Beach 3--Matt Taylor scored four goals and Alex Martinez had a goal and five assists for Irvine (1-0).
Valencia 3, Sunny Hills 2--Jose Ventura scored in the 73rd minute to break a 2-2 tie for host Valencia (1-4-1). Rigoberto Flores scored twice to help Sunny Hills (1-3-2) take a 2-0 lead in the first half.
In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament final:
Loara 2, Long Beach Millikan 0--Betty Medina scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute and Lauren Lappin scored in the 36th minute for Loara (7-0).
In pool play at the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament:
University 78, Huntington Beach 75--Danny Tran made one of two free throws with two seconds left and then Andy Lawrence intercepted the inbounds pass and was fouled, making both free throws, to seal the victory for host University (4-2).
Lawrence finished with 23 points, making five of nine three-pointers.
In the first round of the Sonora tournament:
La Habra 70, Tustin 67--Tristen Gadberry scored 25 points and Jason Smallwood had 20, including six three-pointers, for La Habra (4-3).
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
No. 5 Servite 66, Los Angeles Loyola 45--Roger Hogan scored 20 points for host Servite (6-3).
Costa Mesa 76, Savanna 66--Ryan Naff scored 32 points, making nine of 12 three-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds for host Costa Mesa (5-2).
Orange Lutheran 78, Saddleback 42--Jason Whieldon scored 32 points for Orange Lutheran (7-1).
At the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:
Whittier California 32, University 25--Kirsten von Tungeln had a school-record 29 rebounds for University (2-4).
