Police Chiefs Assn. Names Incoming Leaders

LOS ANGELES COUNTY — Pasadena Police Chief Bernard K. Melekian will become president of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Assn. Jan. 2.
Melekian, Pasadena’s police chief since 1996, will take over an organization that is hoping to establish a higher profile and become the third leg of law enforcement in the county, alongside the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A former Santa Monica police captain, Melekian rose through that city’s ranks.
Seeking to strengthen its political power across the county, the organization in recent months has established formal bylaws and policies and become a nonprofit organization.
Its new executive board includes Covina Police Chief Lawrence E. Lewis, who will serve as first vice president, and South Pasadena Police Chief Michael Berkow, who will serve as second vice president.
