VALLEY VILLAGE — One firefighter was injured and 11 residents were forced to seek temporary shelter Saturday after an apartment building was damaged by fire that spread from an adjoining carport.
Four vehicles were destroyed and the roof of the two-story, six-unit building damaged in the fire that broke out at 11:45 p.m. Friday in the 12000 block of Riverside Drive, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
The injured firefighter was treated at a nearby hospital for a second-degree burn on his hand and released. The Red Cross was called in to find shelter for nine adults and two children living at the apartment building, Humphrey said.
The blaze took 10 fire companies and 50 firefighters about half an hour to extinguish. Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the building and $50,000 in personal possessions, including the vehicles. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
