Marriage Measure Is Misguided

* I must add my hearty “amen” to the astute column by the Rev. Alan Jones (Nov. 10) on state Sen. William “Pete” Knight’s “definition of marriage” measure.

To me the initiative is both misguided and manipulative, as well as being unjust and unnecessary.

As a pastor and chaplain for over 40 years under Baptist and Congregational endorsements, I believe that Christ’s universal law of love far supersedes all the biblical proof-texting of well-meaning but fearful Christians.

Additional kudos to Dana Parsons for his fascinating column Nov. 10 on the attempt at reconciliation between pastors Mel White and Jerry Falwell in bringing “gays and straights” into more authentic dialogue.

How much longer will we allow religious zealots to put us on guilt trips in order to maintain prejudice and ignorance about gender, race or class, all under the guise of superior spirituality?
