* Re “ ‘Awareness’ Threatens Our Concept of Oneness,” Ventura County Perspective commentary by William A. Anderson, Nov. 28.
While I agree wholeheartedly with the premise of Mr. Anderson’s article, his vision of the Pilgrims perpetuates a common misunderstanding of the original Northern colonies in America.
Far from creating “a new society . . . in which everyone would be welcomed” the Pilgrims actually came for freedom to practice their religion. They did not tolerate other religions, and strangers were expelled from their towns. Colonial Massachusetts was a very exclusionary place.
