Carson Dominates Late, 28-7

With his team trailing at halftime despite its first-half dominance, Carson Coach John Aguirre was angry.

The emotion was directed at the officials. But the intensity rubbed off on the Colts.

Top-seeded Carson regained control of its City Section championship semifinal against Dorsey by shutting out the Dons in the second half for a 28-7 victory before an estimated 2,000 Friday night at Gardena High.

Advancing to their first major division City final since 1993, the Colts (11-2) will play Crenshaw, a 34-13 winner over San Pedro, on Friday at the Coliseum. Carson reached the 3-A title game two years ago.

“It is one of the reasons why I came to Carson,” said Aguirre, who also took Garfield to the semifinals in 1997. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be at the place where Coach [Gene] Vollnogle made into a City power.”

Using a bruising defense and a big effort by running back James Robinson, Carson scored 22 unanswered points to overcome a 7-6 deficit and shut down Dorsey (10-3).

Wendell Hunter gave the Colts the lead for good with a one-yard scoring run, capping a 10-play drive to open the second half. Ashley Subingsubing made it 14-7 when he caught a two-point conversion pass from quarterback Justin Cooper.

The defense took over as it held the Dons to 83 yards. Dorsey was further hampered when quarterback Stanley Hollis left the game because of a cracked rib.

Robinson provided the offense for Carson with 155 yards in 12 carries. He gave the Colts a 21-7 lead with a 14-yard touchdown through the heart of the Dorsey defense.

“They were so physical up front,” Dorsey Coach Paul Knox said. “We didn’t stop them on their first drive [of the second half] and then we couldn’t move the ball.”
