Surfer Found Unconscious Offshore Dies

A man found unconscious in the surf off Bolsa Chica State Beach died Tuesday, authorities said.
Lifeguards said they don’t know the cause of death but don’t think he drowned or was hurt by his board.
“He was sitting on his board one minute and the next minute he was in the water,” lifeguard Albert Fimland said.
Lifeguard supervisor Joe Milligan said the man, clad in a wetsuit, was floating near his board at about noon when another surfer spotted him near lifeguard tower 18. The other surfer brought him ashore, Milligan said.
The surfing conditions were not hazardous Tuesday, Milligan said, and nobody saw the man struggle.
Lifeguards unsuccessfully tried to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at Huntington Beach Hospital. His identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.
An autopsy is set for today.
