Ordonez Shows He Has the Power

CHICAGO — Magglio Ordonez hit the first grand slam of his career and added a solo home run in his next at-bat Wednesday night as the Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 9-1, for a doubleheader sweep.

Ordonez also hit a solo home run as the White Sox won the opener, 10-7.

The five runs batted in in the second game were a career-high for Ordonez, who leads Chicago with six home runs. It was his first multihomer game.

Tony Saunders (2-3) looked nothing like the pitcher who came within four outs of a no-hitter in his previous start. He gave up nine runs--eight earned--and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of the second game.

After giving up an RBI double to Ray Durham in the third, Saunders walked Mike Caruso and then hit Frank Thomas with a pitch that loaded the bases. That brought up Ordonez, who homered.

In the fifth inning, Ordonez put a 2-and-2 pitch in the backdrop in center field. Brook Fordyce and Ray Durham also drove in runs as Chicago took a 9-1 lead.

In the first game, Ordonez and Thomas hit consecutive homers in the third inning, and the rest of the White Sox added seven more runs to bail out Jim Parque (3-1), who gave up five runs in five innings.
