LONG BEACH — A San Pedro woman who had a child by her adolescent lover must never associate with the father or she will be sent to state prison, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said.
At a hearing in Long Beach Superior Court this week, Arlene Diane Roybal, 28, was sentenced to a year in jail and eight years’ probation for lewd conduct with a child under 14. Roybal, who already has served much of her jail time, will soon enter a halfway house and must abide by a number of strict probation conditions, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the district attorney. She can be sent to prison if she violates any of the conditions.
Prosecutors say Roybal had a 3-year sexual relationship with a troubled boy who is now 15. Although prosecutors initially accused her of several more serious sexual offenses, they agreed to accept a no contest plea to the single lewd conduct charge when the victim refused to cooperate with authorities, Gibbons said. Roybal was also barred from unsupervised visits with her 11-month-old baby, as well two sons she had with her ex-husband. She must register with the police as a convicted sex offender and undergo counseling. Further, she has been barred from contacting the 15-year-old even after he reaches adulthood.
