* When: Today-Saturday, May 1; begins 7 a.m. Monday, 8 a.m. all other days
* Where: Today at Oceanside North Harbor; other days at Lower Trestles, San Clemente
* Basics: Second stop on the 1999 Panasonic ShockWave Tour, the $62,000 Surfbout is California’s longest-running uninterrupted pro surfing contest and the first of the summer season. The Assn. of Surfing Professionals-sanctioned World Qualifying Series contest features men’s and women’s surfing, longboarding and bodyboarding divisions. Among the previous Surfbout winners are six-time world champion Kelly Slater and former U.S. champions Taylor Knox, Shane Beschen (San Clemente) and Rob Macado. Among the women expected to compete this year are reigning world champion Layne Beachley and former world champion Pauline Menczer, both from Australia.
