The City Council this week took the Irvine Co. to task for its “neutral” stance on the proposed international airport at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. Per the council’s request, Mayor Christina L. Shea will now write a letter to Donald L. Bren, CEO of the Irvine Co., requesting he clearly state his stand on the airport.
The action followed a city staff report titled “It’s Always Been Non-Aviation” that showed how the original design of the Irvine Ranch’s master-planned community never called for an airport. The company, which has never supported an airport in the Irvine vicinity, has yet to take a position on the base reuse proposal because it needs more information, said Paul Kranhold, vice president of corporate communications. The company’s property surrounds the base. Information: (949) 724-6281.
