Target Stores said it will open 35 new stores in 18 states in October, boosting the discount retailer’s number of stores to 916. In California, new outlets are planned for Irvine and Walnut Creek. Target is the largest and fastest-growing unit of Minneapolis-based Dayton Hudson Corp.

EBay Inc. said it’s teaming up with Butterfield & Butterfield, the venerable auction house, to bring antiques and fine art to its world of cyber-bidding. The new category is expected to be listed on the online auctioneer’s home page in the second quarter.

3Com Corp. is reorganizing its unit that makes telephone modems and computer connector cards and will fire 150 workers as it refocuses on higher-growth products. The networking company said the job cuts will be at its modem units in Santa Clara, Calif., Chicago and Salt Lake City. The company will transfer another 150 workers to units that make cable modems and other products.
