The California Surf Lifesaving Assn. will present Patrick Quigley, a Laguna Beach lifeguard, the Heroic Acts Award on Thursday in Long Beach for his actions on Mother’s Day last year.
On May 12, 1998, 6-year-old Brooke Poling, her mother, Angelica Cuevas of Huntington Beach, and Cuevas’ boyfriend, Zackery Noah Kunzler of Seal Beach, were strolling along the rocks at Diver’s Cove when a wave swept them into the ocean. Quigley responded, saving Poling first and then diving back in to get Cuevas, who later died. Kunzler also died, of cardiac arrest.
About 75 lifeguards, most of who serve in Southern California, will attend the group’s twice annual regional meeting, which includes discussions on rescue techniques and other life saving essentials.
