The City Council tonight is expected to recommend that two parcels--Cousteau Pit and the Juan Avila Adobe--be named city historical landmarks and to order the draft of a guide to the sites. In the 1960s, prehistoric fossils, including the bones of a 40,000-year-old elephant, were found at Costeau Park--now known as Costeau Pit. The adobe, which dates from the mid-1800s, was the center of political talks concerning the annexation of California. A formal dedication is expected to take place in July.
