Hearing to Focus on Changes in 562 Area Code

LONG BEACH — A public hearing on changes in Long Beach’s 562 telephone area code will be held Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Long Beach City Council chambers, 333 W. Ocean Blvd.
Representatives of the California Public Utilities Commission will moderate the meeting, which will review alternatives for a new area code.
Area code planners predict that the 562 area code will be depleted within two years.
City officials in Long Beach have opposed changes in the existing area code, saying they would harm businesses and confuse residents.
