The First Southern Baptist Church says it is struggling to get additional volunteer labor and donations to build the city’s only permanent homeless shelter. Pastor Wiley Drake said volunteers have finished the grading and soil testing, which cost about $75,000. The church, however, needs more donated materials and volunteers with expertise in electrical wiring, plumbing and sprinklers, Drake said. Church officials must meet with the city this month to give a status report. Information or donations: (714) 522-7201.
