Calvary Church Newport Mesa recently received Planning Commission permission to build a new church, a two-building education center and a four-level parking structure on Newport Boulevard, between Victoria and Bay streets. For about three years the church had been seeking an alternative to its current location, at 190 23rd St., because it has reached its capacity and there is no room to expand without affecting residential neighbors. The three new buildings, not counting the parking structure, would occupy about 60,000 square feet. There have been attempts to develop the Newport Boulevard lot commercially, but there were problems with leasing, said Planning Commissioner Walt Davenport.
