Hartsburg Won’t Demand Tape Reviews

Coach Craig Hartsburg wanted to make one thing perfectly clear Monday:

He has no intention of running to the NHL office and demanding a suspension every time he thinks an opposing player has delivered a cheap shot.

And that goes for Sunday’s play in which Keith Tkachuk of the Phoenix Coyotes cracked his stick over Tomas Sandstrom’s head.

“It’s obviously a penalty, but we’ve got to trust the refs and the league,” Hartsburg said. “These things are in good hands. We’re not going to get into that [asking Colin Campbell, NHL vice president of hockey operations, to review videotapes]. We’ve got to trust the league to do the right things.”

Sandstrom was uninjured on the third-period play and Tkachuk was not penalized.

Hartsburg expects to play defenseman Ruslan Salei for the first time this season Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Salei served a five-game suspension for tripping Coyote center Daniel Briere in an exhibition game Oct. 6 and was a healthy scratch for Sunday’s 2-2 tie against Phoenix.

Salei has no plans to alter his style.

“I’m not going to go hit guys, then make sure they don’t fall down,” he said. “ . . . It’s tough to change anything. It’s not my style.”

Guy Hebert is expected to start his sixth consecutive game in goal Wednesday, but Hartsburg indicated he will probably give backup Dominic Roussel a start against either Dallas or St. Louis this weekend.

“We have confidence in both of them,” Hartsburg said. “Dominic was outstanding against Washington [a 1-0 loss in the season opener Oct. 10]. You have to establish a No. 1 guy, but it’s not to say the other guy is not going to get some quality games.”
