Caffrey Quits as Patriots’ Football Coach

Tom Caffrey has stepped down as football coach at Heritage Christian because of health reasons, but will remain at the school as athletic director and a history teacher.

Caffrey, 63, has diabetes and high blood pressure and said he has decided to quit coaching. He has been a football coach for 37 years, including a 24-year stint at Whittier Christian, where he guided the Heralds to four Southern Section titles. His overall record was 200-83.

He resigned as the Patriots’ baseball coach at the end of the 1997 season. His son, Paul, graduates from Heritage Christian next month.

El Modena boys’ basketball Coach Joe Roussel will not return next season.

Vanguards’ Athletic Director Don Mott said he and Roussel, a walk-on coach, came to a mutual agreement over Roussel’s departure.

“We have decided we want a coach on campus and he could not do that,” Mott said.

Roussel’s five-year record was 54-52. The Vanguards were 12-14 last season, but finished tied for second in the Century League behind Villa Park.

Leticia Oseguera and Sabrina Roberson, who played for UC Irvine women’s basketball team, have been invited to the Los Angeles Sparks tryout camp this weekend at Loyola Marymount.

Oseguera, a 5-foot-11 forward, was a three-year starter and averaged 14.1 points last season. She is the school’s career rebound leader and was second in career points.

Roberson, a 5-8 guard, was also a three-year starter and averaged 8.9 points last season. She was one of the Big West Conference’s top defenders and had 113 career steals.
