View the migration of the gray whale aboard a whale-watching boat, search for dolphins, sea lions and sea birds along the coastline with experts from the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, after a slide show and lecture on whales.

The International Documentary Assn. and the Directors Guild of America are co-sponsoring DocuDay, an all day screen-a-thon of all five of this year’s Oscar-nominated long documentaries, and three of the shorts (two of the short docs are Imax films and must be seen on a large-format screen). Among the films to be screened: Spike Lee and Sam Pollard’s “4 Little Girls,” local filmmakers Michele Ohayon and Julia Schachter’s “Colors Straight Up,” Dan Gifford and William Gazecki’s “Waco: The Rules of Engagement.” All of the filmmakers are scheduled to be on hand for discussions after the screenings of their films. All day: Oscar Countdown

If the names Matt Damon and Judi Dench aren’t familiar to you yet, get thee to a cineplex! Some of the films to catch up with if you want to be current around the water cooler Tuesday morning: “Good Will Hunting” (nine nominations); “L.A. Confidential” (nine); “As Good as It Gets” (seven); “Wings of the Dove” (four); “Boogie Nights” (three); “Mrs. Brown” (two); “The Sweet Hereafter” (two); “Wag the Dog” (two); “Afterglow” (one); “The Apostle” (one); and if you’ve been living in a cave, “Titanic” (14). You can rent “The Full Monty” (four nominations) and “Donnie Brasco” (one). “Four Days in September,” at the NuWilshire, is the only foreign language film nominee in release, and most of the best documentary nominees are at the Monica 4-Plex or Sunset 5. And since you probably won’t have to squeeze into a gown or tux come Monday evening, eat all the buttered popcorn you want.

All songbirds--secret shower singers included--are welcome.

It’s starting to look like an annual tradition: Country music legend Merle Haggard returns to Bakersfield for a homecoming show at the Crystal Palace, the honky-tonk emporium his homeboy Buck Owens opened a while back. Besides soaking up the incomparable Haggard sound, you can drink in the bar, eat at the restaurant, browse in the museum and stock up on memorabilia at the gift shop.
