Matadors Draw a Split in Softball

Cal State Northridge split a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, losing the first game, 2-0, before rallying for a 3-2 victory at Northridge.

The Matadors (13-9, 4-3 in conference play) won the second game by breaking a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning. Cheri Shinn led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Jessica Creith and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jodi Borenstein.

Borenstein hit her first college home run, a two-run shot in the second inning to give Northridge a 2-0 lead.

Desarie Knipfer pitched a three-hitter for the Mustangs in the opener.

BASEBALL

Glendale 3-15, Canyons 1-11--John Campanella hit a two-run home run and Freddy Sanchez followed with a solo shot in the sixth inning of the first game and the Vaqueros went on to sweep a Western State Conference South Division doubleheader at Glendale.

Phil Onsaga hit a grand slam and a two-run home run for Glendale in the second game.

Canyons (11-8, 3-7) committed six errors in the second game and lost its fifth consecutive game.

Cuesta 15, Ventura 1--The Bulldogs (17-4, 6-1) pounded seven pitchers for 18 hits in a WSC North Division game at Ventura.

The Pirates (5-10, 2-6) had five hits.

Oxnard 8, Moorpark 4--Matt Pitstick had three hits, including a game-breaking three-run home run in the seventh for the Condors (13-4, 6-1) in a WSC game.

Moorpark is 6-16, 3-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Penn State d. CS Northridge, 15-11, 16-14, 16-14--Chad Strickland had 25 kills, Junior Mosones had 23 and Adam Black added 20 for Cal State Northridge, but the Matadors (4-12) lost a nonconference match at Cal State Northridge.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, Penn 1--Michael Jessup scored two points for the seventh-ranked Waves at Pepperdine (15-4).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 7, New Mexico 2--Zsofia Csapo and Angela Lawrence combined for three points and the 14th-ranked Waves (11-4) beat the Lobos (12-1) at Pepperdine.
