Princeton System Not Cleaves’ Style

The Princeton system requires patience and a certain amount of personal sacrifice, and Michigan State point guard Mateen Cleaves says it’s not for him.

“I have a lot of respect for their style. It fits them well, and they run it very well,” Cleaves said after the Spartans’ 63-56 East Regional victory over the Tigers. “I like to get it out and run and gun though. I have a lot of respect for the program, but it wouldn’t be the program for me.”

North Carolina Charlotte’s nickname, the 49ers, is widely thought to be because the school is on Highway 49.

The school says it is because of the date of the school’s founding.

Only it was founded in 1946, and 46ers doesn’t have the same ring. The former North Carolina extension actually became Charlotte College in 1949, however.

North Carolina Charlotte forward Charles Hayward, who was found to have leukemia before the season, wasn’t with the team but home in Charlotte, where he has undergone chemotherapy and is in remission.

A freshman forward, Hayward was a prized recruit who was expected to play a key role this season.

Doctors say he still needs a bone-marrow transplant and are searching for a matching donor. The National Marrow Donor Program is working to increase its registration of potential minority donors, because the chances of finding a donor for minorities is about 59%, compared to 80% overall.
